The importance of providing accurate and timely
information to the travelling public is widely
recognised in GB and mainland Europe, and has
become an increasingly important function for
the staff in TICC. Pre trip information can assist
travellers decide on timing of a journey, which
route to take, and what mode of transport to use.
Roads Service Traffic Information and Control
Centre has used innovative technology to display
on the Internet real time pictures from CCTV monitoring
cameras in Belfast.
This website also displays up to date information
on prevailing traffic conditions.
A hotline for traffic information
is also provided by TICC. The information
is updated at approximately 10 minute intervals
during the peak traffic periods, and at a
lesser frequency during other times of the
day.
The telephone number to
ring is: 08457 123321
During the course of a journey, drivers
are kept up to date with reports of traffic
conditions via the local radio traffic and
travel broadcasts. BBC Radio Ulster broadcasts
live from TICC during morning and evening
peak traffic periods, and TICC staff disseminate
traffic information to the other local radio
stations. The motorway driver information
system of rotating prism and electronic
variable message signs is used to inform
drivers of abnormal traffic conditions on
their route. These signs are also occasionally
used to display messages in support of road
safety campaigns.
On the urban road network, electronic signs
have been installed at strategic locations.
These signs have the dual purpose of providing
either car park information or information
to drivers on current traffic conditions.
